What's Happening - November 2005

Annual Membership Meeting

THURSDAY — NOVEMBER 3, 2005 at 7:00pm
(FRIENDS MEMBERS ONLY! - join today) Scott Weidensaul

Mark the date on your calendar! Come to the Benjamin Olewine III Nature Center for an evening of interest, updates, information, and a very special program with special guest speaker, Scott Weidensaul who has been instrumental in the rediscovery of the ivory-billed woodpecker in Arkansas.

Weidensaul is the author of "Ghost with Trembling Wings." We cannot let go of some animals. Even though science and common sense tell us they are extinct, some species - Ghost with Trembling Wings like the fabled Tasmanian tiger in the mountains of Australia - keep their grip on the human imagination, aided by tantalizing hints of their continued existence, enough to keep alive the hope that they may not be gone. And every so often, one of these lost species does in fact reappear, like the astounding rediscovery of the ivory-billed woodpecker.

What is it about these ghost species that enthralls us? And what does their rediscovery mean in this day of global biodiversity loss? Join naturalist and author Scott Weidensaul for an exploration of this fascinating and complex subject, based on his book The Ghost with Trembling Wings. Weidensaul, who joined the secret hunt for the ivorybill last winter, will also discuss the significance of that remarkable event.

Meet and greet and book signing opportunities will be available after the program.

This is the time when you can meet your Board of Directors and join in conversation regarding things that are happening at Wildwood Lake. Your interest and support are crucial to our mission. We hope to see you here!

Light hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be offered.
