What's Happening - October 2006
To Build a Kiosk
October 31, 2006 "You want me to crawl up there," replied Tyler
Scott when asked to mount the roof of the kiosk to finish the last row of shingles.
Jeff Grinaway, teacher of Central Dauphin S.A.I.L. program, assured Tyler it was
safe.
Seven
students helped build the kiosk on site at Wildwood Lake Sanctuary in northern Harrisburg.
The students had been constructing the frame and roof of the kiosk for several weeks
at the school and today was the day when they finally put the kiosk in the ground.
The S.A.I.L. program provides hands on experiential learning and class credit. They received a grant for trail improvements in the Harrisburg area and were able to donate materials, skill and labor to build the kiosk and perform installation. Mr. Grinaway knew of Wildwood through past service projects and Central Dauphin School District’s use of the Olewine Nature Center as a field study trip learning destination.
The building and installation of the kiosk for the meadow is a key piece to enhancing the interpretation of the park to visitors. The kiosk marks a half way stopping place for visitors walking around the lake on the Wildwood Way Trail. Classes use the area for insect study and ecology lessons. Visitors use the area for photography, exercise, bird watching and hiking. Thanks to the students, people will have more opportunities to learn about this unique wetland park and experience more of all it has to offer.
